This sweet family welcomed me into their home to document life with their first daughter for a . This was originally planned as a fresh newborn session, but as life got busy for the family, we ended up scheduling it when their little one was two months old. It was a beautiful reminder that there’s no right or wrong time to capture these moments—every stage is worth documenting!

As a Kitsap County family photographer, I love capturing these fleeting moments in the comfort of your own home, where baby’s early days are spent snuggled in your arms. Our first family photos with my daughter were done in our home and I appreciated the ease of the getting-ready process; no need to worry about loading a newborn into their carseat, finding a spot, and braving the weather! If you’re considering an in-home newborn session in Kitsap County, here’s what to expect--and why it’s the perfect way to document your growing family.

Why Choose an In-Home Newborn Session?

In-home newborn photography offers a relaxed, intimate setting where your baby (and you!) can feel most comfortable, making the session more enjoyable for you. There’s no need to pack a diaper bag or worry about traveling—your home provides the perfect backdrop filled with personal touches. Whether it’s the nursery, a cozy corner of the living room, or a snuggle session on the bed, every image tells the story of your family’s new beginning.

What to Expect During Your Session

I keep newborn sessions calm, relaxed, and natural, allowing plenty of time for feedings, diaper changes, and soothing. I want to document your baby just as they are—tiny fingers wrapped around yours, sleepy yawns, and sweet cuddles with parents and siblings. Don't stress if things don't go exactly according to plan - I know babies fuss, toddlers tantrum, and plans change - we aren't in a rush and I am patient. :) We'll use windows around your home to find natural lighting and create timeless, honest images you'll cherish forever.

Preparing Your Home for a Newborn Session

No need for a spotless house—lived-in and cozy is perfect! I recommend choosing one or two rooms with ample natural light and decluttering small areas (especially near windows) where we’ll be photographing.

Soft, neutral-colored outfits work beautifully, and keep the focus on simple, meaningful interactions. Once you've booked your session with me, I'll send over my client style guide with more details on how to choose the best and most comfortable outfits for your session.

If you have a favorite baby blanket, outfit, or doll, have those ready to use so we can incorporate some personal touches into the images!

On the day of your session, I recommend (as a general rule of thumb--you know your baby best and everyone is different!) getting a feed and diaper change in as close to the session start as possible, to maximize the time baby has a full and happy tummy as we work through the photos. Of course, I always allow (and expect!) time for feedings and diaper changes during the session, so if it doesn't work out this way, don't fret! We're on their schedule. I get it.

When is the Best Time for an In-Home Newborn Session in Kitsap County?

As far as age goes, the ideal time for a newborn session is within the first two weeks after birth, when babies are sleepier and curl up naturally, making for naturally snuggly images. However, if your baby is a little older, that's perfect too! Every stage is so beautiful and important.

As far as weather goes, while Kitsap (Silverdale, Bremerton, Poulsbo, Bainbridge Island, and surrounding areas) is notoriously unpredictable, the benefit of an in-home newborn session is that it doesn't matter if there's rain outside--we'll be cozied up in your home!

And as far as timing goes, I prefer to shoot when the sun is high to maximize the amount of natural light we have coming through your windows. This typically means between 11a-2p in the winter months and 9a-6p in the summer months. However, this is flexible, and I'll refer to my sunrise/set app and we'll chat about baby's schedule to figure out the best time for your family.
